On Thursday 7th June, the ABC reported that “Federal Government scientists have started surveying the Cooper Basin in south-west Queensland in a search for geothermal hot rocks. Geoscience Australia's Dr Ian Lambert says ‘We're trying to give more definitive information on where companies should be looking. Previous exploration has been based on general assumptions [some companies may dispute this! Ed.]. We're hoping that future exploration after this survey will be based more on factual information.’” Time will tell. |

|
June proper kicked off on Friday 1st with the release of the report by the Prime Minister’s emissions trading task force. The report recommended that a “cap and trade” scheme should be designed and in place by 2011, with trading to begin in 2012. It’s hard to put an exact date on some bits of news. Around the middle of the month the Western Australian Premier Alan Carpenter declared a personal preference for geothermal energy to power a couple of new desalination plants slated for the SW of the state in the coming few years.
Also, towards the end of the month I stumbled upon evidence that the NSW Department of Primary Industries is having a fresh look at geothermal energy, with the inclusion in their $8m New Frontiers program of “thermal and crustal modelling using borehole temperature data merged with subsidence and basin thermal history [to] identify 'hotspots' and source rocks for geothermal energy.”
