Petratherm announce next stage of devlopment |

Petratherm Limited announced the start of work on the next phase of development for the Paralana Energy Joint Venture (with Beach Petroleum).
This phase involves the design of the two deep wells required for a circulation test, and the choice of an appropriate drilling rig. To help them they have enlisted the services of Australian Drilling Associates (Melbourne) and Global Power Solutions (Nevada).

Petratherm Limited had a big day of announcements on Monday 4th June. PTR has appointed California-based geothermal energy consultancy Global Power Solutions to provide technical oversight to well design and drilling processes at Paralana, together with planning and engineering design work for a power generation plant. On the same day, PTR announced that the Paralana Energy Joint Venture, consisting of PTR and Beach Petroleum, has approved the commencement of deep well design and the rig selection process to develop an underground heat exchanger at Paralana by the end of July next year. |

Beattie announces ClimateSmart |

Queensland Premier Peter Beattie announced QLD’s ClimateSmart strategy to address climate change. The strategy includes $50 million for the Queensland Renewable Energy Fund, which will be accessed through a competitive bidding process and provide support to develop emerging technologies such as geothermal and solar thermal in QLD. |

The Queensland Premier, Peter Beattie, announced a $50m fund for emerging technology aimed at reducing Queensland's greenhouse gas emissions.
Technologies mentioned explicitly are geothermal and solar thermal. He also announced that Queensland have set a target of 10% electricity to be generated from low emissions technology by 2020.

Roy Baria joins Hot Dry Rocks |

On Sunday June 3rd, Roy Baria joined HDRPL as a Director and Senior Specialist Consultant. Roy has over 30 years’ experience in the development and management of hot dry rock projects, including as Deputy Project Director at Rosemanowes in the UK, and Chief Scientist at Soultz in France. Roy has organised a number of international workshops on HDR/EGS and co-wrote the IEA/GIA protocol on managing the risk of induced seismic events. He is currently Task Leader for the “Enhanced Geothermal Systems” Annex of the IEA/GIA (sponsored by Geodynamics Limited.) We are very excited to welcome Roy to our team. |

Report by the Prime Minister’s emissions trading task force released |

June proper kicked off on Friday 1st with the release of the report by the Prime Minister’s emissions trading task force. The report recommended that a “cap and trade” scheme should be designed and in place by 2011, with trading to begin in 2012. No actually numbers were suggested, or what initial price should be put on carbon. Any such scheme, however, might be expected to benefit geothermal energy developments. |

Rudd announces $50m geothermal drilling scheme |

In a speech also on Wednesday 30th, the Leader of the Labor Opposition Party, Kevin Rudd, announced a $50m pot of money earmarked for a dollar-for-dollar support scheme for “geothermal drilling.”
That’s like a super PACE scheme! Now if only there were rigs for hire…

It’s hard to put an exact date on some bits of news. Around the middle of the month the Western Australian Premier Alan Carpenter declared a personal preference for geothermal energy to power a couple of new desalination plants slated for the SW of the state in the coming few years.
Also, towards the end of the month I stumbled upon evidence that the NSW Department of Primary Industries is having a fresh look at geothermal energy, with the inclusion in their $8m New Frontiers program of “thermal and crustal modelling using borehole temperature data merged with subsidence and basin thermal history [to] identify 'hotspots' and source rocks for geothermal energy.”

Geodynamics drill rig leaves Houston |

Geodynamics Limited’s new drill rig left Houston by ship on Wednesday 30th May, bound for Brisbane. It was projected to arrive in Brisbane towards the end of June (no fresh word on this as of 1st July) and be on site at the Habanero project about 10 days later. |
