On the evening of Monday 25, ABC Radio National hosted a live-to-air radio debate about “Should Australia bet its energy supply on hot rocks? Or if we're going to invest in renewable energy, should we stick to more proven forms such as solar or wind?” Guests included Susan Jeanes (CEO of the AGEA), David Harries (Director of RISE, Murdoch University), Klaus Regenauer-Lieb (Geothermal Centre of Excellence, WA) and Doone Wyborn (Geodynamics). Exasperation over the content of discussions over the next 20 minutes or so led Prame Chopra to call in to restore some clarity and fact to a discourse that revealed some disturbing misinformation and concerns amongst the general public…and within the geothermal sector itself. Radon, earthquakes, water, and cooling the earth are repeatedly expressed as concerns (as well as cost, remoteness etc).
