Mapping and visualization techniques give us a better understanding of the world’s geothermal resources. We at Hot Dry Rocks are a world leader in the development of heat flow and temperature maps. Recently, HDR partnered with Google.org to develop the Global EGS Potential Protocol which has been approved by the IEA To assist our exploration efforts, HDR integrates all site and regional geologic data to develop heat flow estimates. These maps are surface expressions of 3D geologic and thermal models, and provide guidance on further exploration and site development. In mapping geothermal potential, we use a standard protocol so continuity and comparison are easily achieved. While a standard, and open sourced, protocol, the real challenge lies in interpreting a full range of site information (e.g., geology, thermal properties, recovery factors, power conversion efficiencies, and ambient temperatures).
