Dr Roy Baria - Senior Specialist Consultant Roy Baria

Roy has over 30 years experience in the development and management of hot dry rock (HDR) projects. He became involved in the early stages of HDR research at the Camborne School of Mines (Cornwall) in 1976, where he remained until 1990, rising to the position of Deputy Project Director. In this position he supervised all geophysical activities at the site, including HDR resource assessment, micro-seismic monitoring of hydraulic stimulations, cross-hole and vertical seismic profile surveys, and a surface seismic reflection survey. Under his management, the program developed an HDR reservoir which circulated for five years at a depth of 2500 m.

During this period, Roy also organised and edited an international HDR conference and proceedings volume, and the first international meeting on borehole seismic.Roy joined the European HDR geothermal programme (at Soultz, France) as Chief Scientist in 1990, a role he held until 2004. Over that period, the project drilled and hydraulically stimulated a number of deep (5,000 m), hot (200°C) wells, and established underground circulation.

Roy was responsible for planning, developing and implementing the microseismic monitoring system and interpretation of the data; planning and implementing high pressure, high temperature, logging programs; submitting project proposals and reports to the European Commission; representing the European Commission at meetings of the International Energy Agency’s Geothermal Implementing Agreement (IEA/GIA); organising the 4th International HDR conference and editing the proceedings volume; representing the European HDR Project on a research program into advanced processing and interpretation of microseismic data.

Since leaving Soultz in 2005, Roy has organised a number of international workshops on HDR/EGS and co-produced the IEA/GIA protocol on managing the risk of induced seismic events.

Roy is currently Task Leader for the “Enhanced Geothermal Systems” Annex of the IEA/GIA.

Dr Gareth Cooper - Senior Consultant Gareth Cooper

A structural/petroleum geologist with a background in basin analysis, seismic interpretation, tectonics and time-temperature histories. He has specialised in the interpretation of organic and inorganic geological temperature indicators (bore-hole and surface) and their integration into the reconstruction of the thermal and structural histories of sedimentary basins. He has published widely on this topic.

Gareth has worked as a Senior Geologist with Santos Ltd on exploration programs in the North West Shelf of Australia and has lectured Earth Science at La Trobe University, The Australian Maritime College and the University of Tasmania.

He has also worked as a Development Engineer and Business Analyst for Comalco-Riotinto (aluminium smelting) and has a detailed knowledge of large-scale industrial electrolytic processes. He also has a diverse interest and experience in data analysis, quality systems, project management and the use of statistical tools such as Six Sigma for continuous/business improvement.

Luke Mortimer - Senior ConsultantLuke Mortimer

Luke is a structural geologist with a background in fractured rock hydrogeology, geomechanics and borehole geophysics. He specialises in the structural and hydraulic characterisation of fractured rock masses and their coupled hydro-mechanical modelling under the influence of in-situ stress fields.

Luke has previously worked as a Senior Geologist for WMC Resources for over 12 years. During this period, he has gained valuable mining, exploration and project management experience in a variety of geological settings across Australia, North America, South America, Africa and China.

He is currently completing his PhD on stress-dependent permeability within fractured rock aquifers and its influence on groundwater flow. Luke is also a member of the Australian Institute of Geoscientists (AIG), International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH) and the Geological Society of Australia (GSA).

Denis Walsh - Consulting Geoscientist Denis Walsh

Denis brings to the team a broad range of geological experience in gold, nickel and precious metal exploration, groundwater evaluation and environmental site assessments in a variety of geological terrains. His exploration experience has spanned from grass roots conceptual targeting through to more advanced stage resource style projects in various states of Australia (east and west coast).

Working with a number of mining and exploration companies Denis has gained valuable experience in a variety of areas including: targeting using geophysics, geochemistry, structural mapping and historical information; extensive drill supervision of shallow drilling methods and deeper RC and diamond drilling; tenement acquisition; landholder liaison; and government reporting requirements.

In addition to exploration Denis has worked in groundwater evaluation in a limestone terrain on the west coast of Ireland and more recently in a consulting role conducting environmental site assessments in Victoria and Tasmania involving assessment and remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater. This broad range of experience has provided Denis with good hands-on field exploration and environmental consulting knowledge and skills that are immediately transferable to the geothermal sector.

Anson Antriasian - Geoscientist anson.jpg

Anson’s background stems from Berkeley CA, where he gained his university training in Earth Science, and intermittently pursued a career in education as an Earth Science teacher where he sought to educate and inspire the youth of Richmond High School.

His subsequent geo-science experience has been in Australia, where he implemented grass-roots exploration programs and supervised exploratory drilling programs for the gold mining industry. He also was responsible for project coordination and engineering for a Brisbane based geotechnical/geo-environmental consultancy. His efforts have thereafter been with the geothermal energy industry, having since worked with GeothermEx in California and with Hot Dry Rocks now in Victoria.

With his deep interest in scientific study, and more particularly, his interest in the role that science is now playing to develop an understanding of how human-kind will fit into the pages of Earth History, Anson has made a home at Hot Dry Rocks and is putting his eclectic skill set into action to invigorate the prospect and practice of sustainable geo-energies.
